The Festival de Cine Fantástico de Canarias Ciudad de La Laguna Isla Calavera has announced at a press conference the titles that will be part of the Official Section of Short Films in Competition, a total of 19 works of national and international production.

For its ninth edition, which will take place from November 7 to 16, the festival has made an extensive and varied selection of short films. A total of 19 works have entered the official section of the competition, where national productions predominate, but in which there is also representation from countries such as France, Germany, Canada, Russia or Iran.

"Animation has also made an important place in this year's selection, with a predominance of science fiction, and a format that also highlights the large female presence in the direction section," says assistant director Vanesa Bocanegra.

In the selection we find Spanish filmmakers linked to the fantasy genre and who have already had previous presence at the festival in the feature film section. This is the case of Kike Maíllo, winner in 2020 with the film Cosmetics of the Enemywho presents Huir; or Kiko Prada, winner of the 2024 Audience Award for Best Feature Film for Historias de Halloween, this time participating with The Call.

After Cavathe magician Jandro has also been selected again with the short film The Reviewerwhile Sam Orti, last year's winner of the award for best short film by both the official jury and the audience award for The Fenceis competing this year with The Aspirant.

The official section of short films in competition is completed with: Listen, Shit, Land of the dead deer, Unclean, De Madrid al cielo, Tinieblas, Vultures, Kenopsia, Amira, Kamarade, La Reine, The Last Bell, Omnivore, Radix y Thanatosby Canarian filmmaker Joel de León.

Made in the Canary Islands

Thus, Thanatos is the representative of the Canary Islands in the official short film section and is also part of the new Made in the Canary Islands label, which includes thirteen other short films written, produced, directed and made in the archipelago, which participate out of competition.

The Canarian selection is especially committed to science fiction with two fan films dedicated to Star Wars (Rebel Storm y Falcon Mission), as well as titles such as The Exact Coordinates, The Boys o Gliese. Terror is represented by Blank Sheetwhile the idiosyncrasy of the Canary Islands and its culture are also the basis of titles such as The Wandering Island, Abora, The Way of the Garrote o Heart(s) of Magma.

Made in the Canary Islands also seeks to give visibility to the quarry of new creators in the islands with works such as Sons of Clock, Okupa o The Invincibles.
