The Department of Culture has just resolved a new call for support to the audiovisual sector, the thirteenth so far this year, in this case referring specifically to large-format events held on the islands. With this one, it would add up to an investment of almost three million euros, including subsidies for the production and development of films, series and short films; sponsorship of medium and small format events; support to movie theaters and others for attendance to professional markets.
Six major film festivals in the Canary Islands will receive strong support from the Government of the Canary Islands this year. The selected proposals are: Festival de Cine Fantástico de Canarias Isla Calavera, Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote, Festivalito La Palma, Premios Quirino de Animación Iberoamericana, Festival Internacional de Cine Medioambiental and Festival de Cortos Villa de La Orotava.
In all cases, this refers to large projects that are organized from the private sector and that, given their size, also require the sponsorship of public entities. In the selection criteria, it has been valued that the events represent a significant and innovative contribution to the cultural offer of the islands, in line with the cultural goals of the Canary Islands in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Canary Agenda 2030 and the gender perspective.
According to the Government of the Canary Islands, events of these characteristics contribute in a decisive way to reactivate the economy in those municipalities where they are held, having a direct impact on other sectors in need at this time, such as hotels, restaurants and commerce.
Likewise, this type of initiatives serve to respond to the demands of different types of audiences, favor cohesion policies, cultural rights and community values, and guarantee access to culture after the effects of the health crisis.
